I think I have just seen the future of software.
I was offline (at least as far as my laptop was concerned) yesterday, so I actually got work done (details *soon*). This morning as I fired up my machine and logged in, (I am not exaggerating here):
- An SMS alert popped up, telling me to install some software.
- My bug tracker (internal app -- Bugger) said it had an update I should install.
- Java Update (no idea how that got there) said there was a new version of the runtime to install.
- The InstallShield updater popped up saying it had to check for updates for one or more products that have been installed with it.
Fortunately I had already installed the MSN Messenger update, or I'd still be installing stuff. Still, this is what I see in our futures of a "Agile development", ClickOnce world -- so many apps needing our attention to install new bits. Is there a metaphor that is less disruptive, but not as dangerous as automatically accepting?
