US elections vs. Canadian elections

One of the things Canadians like to do is to compare themselves to their Southern neighbours (or perhaps it's just me). So, part N of a Y part series on "Differences between 'Mericans and Canadians":

While the US election could have been said to start immediately after the last one, it officially started October 2006, when Duncan Hunter announced he was a candidate. Doing the math poorly means that the US election has currently been going on for 97 weeks (or so), with another 8 weeks to go.

The Canadian election called this morning [1] will happen on Oct 14[2], which means that we [3] will only suffer through 5 weeks of politicians acting childish, media inventing stories and various political promises.

Now if we could just get beer and wine in our grocery stores...

[1] Despite the fact that the current government brought in legislation to fix the election date four years from the previous one
[2] And the results will likely be known by the time news gets over here to the left coast
[3] Not to mention the rest of the world that has to listen about the US election while few will know about the Canadian election until it's over
